Full Tilt Poker was shut down by the gaming authorities in Ireland. This pretty much assures that we will not get paid back this year, if ever. Somewhat disappointing end to my poker career.

Lack of updates.

Been busy and haven't been updating the blog.

Got a new car (nothing fancy), dealing with some problems with the rental properties, moved a little of my play back to PS (after the bonus, I keep getting tricked into trying to get that next stellar reward...), had decent results in March despite taking 8 days off (at work, so no access to the exact numbers).

So since these things have been happening, FTP sent me a surprising email that contained the following sentence: I have noticed that you have not been playing with us as much recently and wanted to see how your poker is going. .

I don't really know how or if I should reply. The reasons my play decreased were the following: . 1) was on vacation for some of March. 2) moved some play to PS for the bonus. 3) got less motivated when I lost my 3x FTP multiplier when my average dipped below 1,500. 4) got less motivated and a little upset about the implementation of bonus points for the durrrr promo (I would have got 32k points for the medium, but only got 21k points for the high). I think they implemented this rather poorly, I should have got either 32k points or 53k points, but I only got 21k points. 5) got a little ticked off about all the MGR deductions that caused me to have no rakeback for 2 weeks and nominal rakeback for a third week. 6) got less motivated and stressed out because of a bad cashout problem and experience with my wire. (at least this got resolved now) .

Even with all of these reasons, I still plan to "get back to the grind" and increase my play again on FTP because I like money.

Don't have the hand history since I am at work, but I have QQ and the other guy has KJ. I open in early position to 3 and he flats, two to flop of QTx (pot 7). I bet 4 he flats (pot 15). Turn A, check-check. River x, I bet 10 he shoves for 60 and I feel owned after I call. Even with his weird line of not betting the turn, it felt like the nuts, but I couldn't fold.

I believed him, and put his range as {Q9s, AA}. Even though there are 6 combos of AA and 4 of Q9s, I thought he was telling the truth. Although many noobs probably thinking shoving JJ here is trivial vs a short stack, it isn't. The guy was 25/8 with 0/23, 3-bets(0%).

Haven't been updating the blog or playing much poker in the last couple of weeks. Here are the happenings.

Did my taxes.
Went to Vegas for a few days, did not play poker.
Pretty sick of poker overall and have been playing Catan online. No money in that but it is a decent game.
Played some on Stars for the bonus. Initial computations at NL($0.25): 12 hrs, 15k hands, $170 profit, 1500 VPP, 1947 FPP(~$30), $20 stellar rewards, $70 of bonus cleared, which is total promo value of $120. MGR: $246, Actual Rake: $303 (yes, I play loose). The same volume at FTP would yield $80 rakeback and 4900 FTP(~$20), which is $100. So basically in summary it is not worth it for me to play on PS unless I have a bonus or am willing to try to get SuperNova status again.
Played 6 of the durrrr challenge freerolls and got $150 and $40. Would have been nice to bink one of these that could actually lead to a major payday, but it was not to be.

Good luck at the tables (to all the spies who say hi to me and that they read my blog and I don't know who they are).

I deposited to get the PokerStars bonus. Will get $150 bonus and $40 stellar rewards and it will cost me the equivalent of ~$75 in rakeback. So it is about $115 free money.

The minimal FPPs I earn are probably about the same as the medals and FTPs that I would earn since I am only BronzeStar. I already lost the $5.50 ticket associated with bonus (JT v QQ on QJ5JT).

I may leave some money after I clear the bonus to play 5-Draw or Stud H/L since those games are not spread much at FTP, and I don't like the dealing method of cards not appearing until everyone draws and ante structure as much either there.

I lost my 3x multiplier for FTP points, with my average dipping below 1500. It is going to be hard to get it back, because my points are more heavily weighted the older they are (ie. I have a bunch of 3000+ point days in NOV/DEC and a bunch of 1000- point days in JAN/FEB).

The challenge Durrr promotion should give me a 3x or 4x additional multiplier for the next couple of weeks, but I am not totally sure I understand if it is 3x on the medium limits or only 4x on the higher limits or both. It would make a big difference in points because my points are primarily from the medium limits, but it is ambiguously written.

In other news I am running quite well this month thusfar.

I still plan to take some days off mid-month.

I 4-bet overshoved many times yesterday. Of course when I have AA or KK they fold.

It was probably tilt since I was running really bad: coolers (KKvAA AIPF), bad beats (AAvKK AIPF), and missing pretty much every draw.

Here were my equities the 3 times my overshove got called.

Got decimated for 13 buyins at the NL($1) level in February. Thought the doomswitch at that limit would turn off for March 1st, but it didn't and lost another 7 buyins at that level.

Made some money on rakeback and also converting points to cash using $26 tickets (overall I don't think I got very good value for my points though since I lost three $216 tickets for no money). Again, I lost a little at MTTs, Stud H/L, and PLO while I made some in SNGs.

Going to take several days off during March as I have played every single day this year so far.

I put two one outer beats on people in the last 2 days.

In return I have been two outed with either 1 or 2 cards to come about 10 times (seriously too painful to review, also usually at the higher limits of NL($1) or NL($2)). I am running below EV in every game at every limit, busting in MTTs, getting coolered on top of the bad beats. The losses have been kept under control, but I can't be wasting all these hours for no money.

Have hardly played any volume this week, and the majority of my play has been at the micro level, NL($0.25). I have been playing so low due to some stress with my investments, my job, and a lower back injury.

It is quite amusing to watch people stack off with flushes on paired boards, top pair no kicker, and overshove for 20x the pot with AK on KQJ etc. Although this is amusing to watch, I hope to take care of my life distractions and move back up to a limit where I can make more money.

Went on tilt after losing a stack AAvKK AIPF again.
Then lost a flip KQs v AA on Kxx with my flush draw (14 outer).

Then had this badly misplayed hand where I lose another stack and get real pissed that this keeps happening.

That ate up about half of my profit this month in about 30 minutes of downswing.

Lost another $216 MTT (43500 points). A couple 60/40s and the tourney is over. I am done with that nonsense. Nearly $700 in points and medals this month and about 10 hours wasted (1 tabling). Going to spend the points on carte blanche, bonuses, or $26 matrix SNGs if they come back to the lobby.

Ring games have been going pretty well, albeit at the lower limits.

The hand is rare that 2 guys go allin on the flop drawing dead, but what is also funny is how bad both of them misplayed their hand with their bet sizings, both preflop and flop.

In other news, ran and played well today, +6 BI, and my reads were spot on snap-calling 2 river bets with AK no pair, because I read their hands perfectly.

It is rare that an allin on the flop is exactly 50/50. Usually it is close like 52/48 or something. Intuitively I thought that my allin with top 2 would be a favorite here, but I was wrong. I won the $400 pot (9s making both of our hands, fading the 2 out redraw), putting me above EV for the first day this month.

Got my butt handed to me at NL($1) for 5.5 buyins. Got coolered a bunch of times and KKvAK and KKvQQ AIPF losses to retarded backraise 5-bet lines and such. Also was experimenting with a 5x open, it did not work out too well. I was doing 6x at NL($0.50) which seemed to work well.

So what do we do when we lose a bunch of buyins. Move up to chase losses :). Won $1800 at NL($4), mostly due to this 550BB monster pot here:

Obviously I am now a pro at NL($0.50) since I profited $12 and can move up. Only 10 buyins below EV, and keeping my 6 day streak of being below EV alive.

Here is a perverted hand, small pot so do not get too excited.

I wanted to fold the river but he priced me in.

Taking into consideration the guy plays super straightforward, he has to have quads. AK would bet flop, KK or QQ would bet turn. Against most players I would lose a lot more here.

I guess FTP doesn't want me to play or something. I got demoralized as mentioned in my last post, so I reverted to playing the 40BB ($20 at NL($0.50)) for a little. So here is 5 "buyins" of EV in an hour.

The month still has another day, but I have time to write a summary now. I don't know why I focus on the negative, maybe that is just my personality. I will get to the somewhat decent monthly results in a minute. However, will start with what is in my foremost mind, that I am net down 10 buyins at NL($0.50) over 40k hands, 8 buyins of AIEV. However, that is not the real pain. I keep running top 2 into bottom set heads-up on the flop (3 times), many other coolers flush vs flush, flush vs set that hits, set vs draw that hits, guys calling small pairs to huge 3-bets and getting set vs overpair etc. etc. etc. I have made a few bad plays too costing me about 3-4 buyins at NL($0.50). Anyhow ...

I forgot this lesson at some point. I just got snapped off 3 river bluffs when I had the nut flush blocker. I guess I have to start overshoving for value because idiots keep calling every time. I just went on a 10 buyin downswing at NL($0.50), only a few buyins under EV, like a full stack allin AQvAT on A52 etc, but kept getting top 2 vs a set (twice), sets snapped off by bad draws (twice), missing big combo draws (twice), set under set, overpair vs set, etc.

Here is one of my awesome plays, I like two jack off-suit.

Lastly, I am purging the hands below from my new database (that I started in 2011). I will probably not play those levels again (super micros and 6-max). To keep a record the table and graph are below. That is 25k hands of pain! To be fair a lot of it was when I was trying to practice 8 and 12 tabling RUSH, which did not work out.

This is an awful lot of big hands in 400 hands. I guess the first one was a mistake in retrospect, especially considering KJ had me good, I was hoping for the overpair and the flush draw vs my top two. You can observe the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hands to see why I am a pimp G not losing my whole stack with monster-like hands (ie. this is not my first time playing online poker).

1) Top 2 vs bottom set vs probably a flush draw. -$400.

2) Set under set. -$180.

3) AA vs OESD. -$160.

4) Set vs the backdoor automatic hits every time draw. -$80.

One winner that saved me. (besides holding AKvAQ AIPF for +$300)

5) Set over set. +$640.

I quit as a small loser on the day, because of the previous post -350 NL($1), and +200 in NL($4). I probably shouldn't have quit since I was in upswing mode and I hate to quit in upswing mode, but it is real late, would hate to go back on a downswing, I can't really handle the variance of NL($4) - pretty stupid!, and am having a few medical problems and need my sleep.

33vAA on 32T... A. 11% equity, but his play is real bad based on how the action went.
78vKJs on 456... flush. 33% equity, but his play is real bad not even drawing to the nuts.

Also, got coolered twice, flush vs flush and full house vs full house. I guess the universe is back to normal now that I am 3 BI under EV in 1k hands.

Lost to some other 2 outers and such in small pots as well. Also lost half a stack with AKvKK on Kwxyz. Getting annoyed.

Oh I forgot I also tried to bluff someone off an overpair(KK) on some gross board that had a 4 card straight and it didn't work.

My session yesterday was fairly short, but it was a session where I played bad and won. This is my rarest type of session and I did not feel too good about it. In some weird way I did not like that I played bad and won ... I am much more used to playing good and losing. In terms of frequency my sessions are:

1. Played good and won.
2. Played good and lost.
3. Played bad and lost.
4. Played bad and won.

Most of my session was just plain spew where I would 3-bet light, then donk a full pot bet on the flop and get called and give up. My 3-bets are getting called too much, so I am just going to stop 3-betting as often. This spew wasted a lot of money, but was saved by the two biggest hands where I was above AIEV which were QQvAA allin on a low card flop for 60BB where I binked a queen, and AKvQQ AIPF in blind vs blind for 105BB.

The AKvQQ was a thinker, I 3-bet in the BB from 3 to 9, and got 4-bet to 25. I knew he had a premium hand and it is questionable to ship it here, but I figure I am more live than normal, but I don't know if that is overweighted by the fact that he will have AA more often. I don't really know if this is correct here because I did not think I was ever way ahead when I shipped here.

With no information I am the normal 11-9 dog here.

Deleterious Rake.

Of course the numbers will depend on your style, even though I am using MGR instead of actual rake to make it more generalized (my personal numbers for rake is 1.1x MGR).

Rake of 1 buyin per:

$2 NL RUSH - 2700 hands.

$1 NL RUSH - 2100 hands.

$0.50 NL RUSH - 1800 hands.

$0.25 NL RUSH - 1700 hands.

$1 NL RUSH(6-max) - 1500 hands.

$0.50 NL RUSH(6-max) - 1300 hands.

$0.25 NL RUSH(6-max) - 1300 hands.

$0.10 NL RUSH(6-max) - 800 hands.

As you can see the lower level you play the rake hurts your winrate that much more. Also, 6-max rake is a lot more hurtful than 9-max. This is obvious anyway, but it is kind of surprising that if you are playing 1000 hands per hour, you are losing about a buyin every 2 hour session in rake, depending on the level.

In other unrelated news, I cleaned up my $0.50 NL RUSH (6-max) graph, and quitting 6-max now that I am up. The invisible man can keep my 8 BI of EV, FTP can keep my 10 BI of rake, and I will have to be happy to keep is 2 BI. I am done losing allin preflops in 6-max with AAvAK etc. ... etc. ... etc. ...

I hadn't played 6-max all year until 2 days ago, and then I had joined the tables on accident. Before I knew I was playing 6-max, I was allin with KJ vs J8s on a KJx board with 2 spades and a stack was gone and I was hooked into 6-max to try to "get even".

Then there are dozens of other hands like this one below that make no sense, but are not reflected in the AIEV because I put the remainder of the stack in bad. ... Not that AIEV is doing well either in NL($0.50)(6-max).

More FTP rewards!

FTP just added more rewards, 3x points for a 1500 average, and 4x points for a 3000 average.

Unfortunately, I am a bit late because my average dropped to 2800 and I can't keep the 3000 average unless I move back up in limits (can't play more hours). These rewards equate to about an extra $300 a month for each level, assuming earning approximately 60k base FTP per month.

The year is going pretty good so far, and have to think about moving back to the higher limits and possibly go up from 4 tables to 6 or 8. To do this I would have to purchase HEM or another copy of PT3 and start playing on my desktop instead of my laptop, to utilize my 30" monitor.

I am off to a good start in 2011. I cleared my $375 year-end bonus, bought and cleared a $100 bonus for 28,500 FTP (yes- horrible value losing $22 over tourney tickets), and will soon have spent enough points for another $100 holiday bonus. I have also earned ~$300 in rakeback so far this year, so ~$870 in promo monies after RB hit.

I played my largest volume ever on the first of the year to earn a lot of triple points. It was 15 hours and 13,000 hands. Not bad for 4-tabling.

The results at the tables have been pretty good as well. 26k hands for $1150, 3 buyins at NL($0.50) and 10 buyins at NL($1). Have only played full ring so far this year. I am only $100 below EV so it feels like I am running great.

I think the games have been extra soft with all the mentally handicapped patients playing to get their year-end bonus. It was fun playing the last few days due to the holiday, but unfortunately tomorrow I have to go back to work.

So I earned enough for 2 additional $26 tokens, which after rakeback hit of $58*.27, so it is like $36 value for playing all day. I got another $36 from the regular point earning, ~$180 in rakeback, and the super pleasure of losing $1300.

I had my first over $1k winning day in quite a while today. I did pretty bad at my MTTs and broke even in the SNGs, but was able to win $1400 in the ring games. Getting sick of the MTTs and only have 9 tickets left. I started playing 6-max again, because I am trying to get enough points to get the free $100 from the store (stupid reason). 2011 - FTP not PS.

It looks like I will be having the majority and possibly all of my play in 2011 at FTP not PS. First some background. In 2005/2006 the majority of my play was spread to many sites (20?) to capture tons of bonuses, but I would say the majority was at UB and OnGame since they had the most bonuses. Then the UIGEA came, my Neteller money was frozen, and most sites closed to US players. In 2007 my play was primarily at FTP and 2008/2009 primarily at PS. In 2010 was split about even between PS and FTP, with the first 4 months of the year at PS, then basically a 4 month break and the last 4 months at FTP.

Why is my play going to be primarily at FTP?

1) The rakeback system is better for me. FTP gets you 27% rakeback, about 2-3% extra rakeback from the points, and then there are affiliate dependent rake races that can add possibly a lot more each month. First, the system at PS is not very good unless you already start out as Supernova (which I lost my status this year, I earned 70k VPP in the first 4 months and then quit) because the rakeback percentage is extremely low at statuses below Supernova. At PS it is a complicated system where you get FPPs and then have save up a lot to get a bonus or concierge service, but usually what happens is that you have to waste time playing satellites to convert your FPPs to T$, and then play even more SNGs to turn those T$ into cash.

2) The game quality is better for me. PS allows 24 tables and FTP only allows 16, so there are more multi-tabling regs. Also, I believe the stratification of 20-50BB and 35-100BB breakdown of the games further ruined the game quality, with most of the fish going to the short stack tables. FTP also has RUSH poker, so instead of massively multi-tabling 24 tables on PS like I used to, I can just play 4 tables of RUSH and get ~1000h/hr which is close to the ~1400h/hr that I got playing 6x as many tables.

3) The software is better for me. I like it more and it goes faster.

4) FTP has more bonuses. Free money is good.

There are of course drawbacks where PS is better, but you can't have the best of both worlds.
(1) PS is better at cashouts.
(2) FTP has annoying deductions. For example, every time I cashout costs me about $80 - $40 fee and an additional $40 rakeback hit, I don't really understand it. Also, you get ripped off on your MGR hits when you buy from the store. As mentioned I bought 75, $26 tournament tickets for 5600 pts. each, yet they deducted my MGR for $28 (5600/250) for each ticket) which is an annoying additional 150 MGR I lost.
(3) PS customer support is in general faster and more competent. FTP is improving vastly in this area though.

The sites are about even in their miscellaneous promotions throughout the year. The rake levels are basically even between the sites as well (PS used to be a leader in this, but decided to increase the rake for all the micro levels below NL25).

I haven't been playing much this month. Just the occassional tourneys with my tickets I ordered (32 left), and then enough ring to earn 250 FTP per day to keep my ironman. Still running below EV almost every day, but I am playing low volume and lower limits so it is not bothering me much.

Today I watched Team America: World Police (I have watched ~2500 movies now) which was not that great of a movie, but there was one pretty good quote, that is applicable in poker and also in life:

In the old days, good players would raise in late position to steal the blinds and that was an innovation for good play.

Recently, good players would 3-bet late position raises from the BTN, SB, and BB and that was an innovation for good play.

I don't know if someone wrote a book or published a video, but the new innovation seems to be small 4-betting with ATo (and other garbage that can't call a 5-bet) out of position. I have yet to adjust to this innovation since I didn't read the book or see the video, so I either have to adjust my game or start shoving light. Theoretically in a 100BB game light 4-betting should not work, but I played about 500 hands of 6-max today and got 4-bet about 5 times, by players whose stats indicated it was a light 4-bet. I actually wasted $35 on a bad river call just to see that I got 4-bet light preflop. Anyhow, I will take the game to the next level.

I played 3 tourneys today. HORSE - beat, beat, beat, could not win a showdown. PLO8 - holy cow some beats and bad river calls when I did not think they could draw out on me both ways with their 2 or 3 outer. Then in the 6-max KO NLHE, I got down to 140 players out of 800 when 100 made the money and I had a double size chip stack when I blunder cashing or going deep with a stupid hand. I don't want to post the hand history because it is so ugly, but I open 75o in early position get called by A8o, flop is A85 and I cont' bet, he flats, turn is 7, I check and then call his overshove and stack off when my 4 outer doesn't hit.

The day was saved when I went on a 600 hand heater winning 5 buyins at NL100, so total for the day was up $300.

Day 4 - Doughnut.

Day 4 of tourneys was a big doughnut. The first 3 days I made at least a final table each day. I only played 4 tourneys today and they were all NLHE and mostly fairly large fields. Today I played 7 tourneys. I had very disappointing bustouts in the first 5 with both bad beats and bad play. I did manage to lift my curse with cashes both in the PLO and the PLO8 today. The PLO was a mincash for $30.10, and the PLO8 was a 3-way deal for $1114.52. I had a big chip lead and the chip-chop would have been quite a bit more the that ICM chop, but at worst I made a $218 mistake by dealing. I had T386k and the others had T148k and T100k. Both of the opponents were winning tourney players and seemed decent, although probably not as good as me in overall poker skill, but possibly better at PLO8. I was super lucky at the final table, so maybe it was dumb to deal, but I like to make 3-way deals as this is my third one this week.

I played 5 tournaments on my second day of tournaments and busted very quickly in the first three. Once again I played like a total moron in the PLO tourney. I did manage to get very deep in the two HORSE tourneys, 27/2861 in the $22 mini-FTOPS for $337.50, and 6/192 in the nightly $26 - $4k guarantee for $170.50. I exited both tourneys on bad beats, but I had to put a few beats on people to even get there, so that is a tourney.
I made a few mistakes as well. I was chip leader in each tourney at one point or another, but could never take overwhelming control of the table. Also at one point in the second tourney when we were down to two tables, I think I won only 1/35 hands which is quite crippling, making it very difficult to win it.

Tourneys Day 1: Success!

I played my first nine tournaments today. Cashed 3/3 in the fixed limit events (Limit HE, HORSE, Stud H/L) and went 0/6 in the NL and PL events (got $16 in knockout bounties, bleh). I think I might have made a couple stupid plays in the PLO and PLO8 tournies. It does get confusing when you are playing 4 different game types at once.

In limit Holdem we did a roughly even 3-way chop ($615.79). In HORSE I lost a 70/30 in the Stud round allin on 5th street with KKxyz vs TTabc and went out 9th ($66.92) just before the final table. In the Stud H/L we did a 3-way chop as well ($618.19). It was a great success, although I sat here roughly 8 hours straight again reminding me of the perils of MTTs.

In the Stud H/L I was owning the final two tables and had half the chips when we were 4-handed, but then went completely card dead.

It has been a hard 3 months of poker. Full Tilt has a Black Card program. I never got my card in the mail and don't really understand the program but that's nice.

I played about 600 hours total of poker in these 3 months, and a total of about 500k hands between RUSH, ring and tourney. That is more than a regular job. My net results over 3 months are about:

RUSH: 13k

rakeback: 9k

rake races/bonuses: 3k

ring/nonholdem: 1k

tourney/SNG: 1k

full tilt points: 1k

to staker: -3k

TOTAL: ~25k in 3 months

When I look at it like this it makes me fairly happy as it has been quite painful the last 8 weeks since I have been on a major downswing (-6k) over the last 200k hands. I also had a swing down of 5k of EV, which is a lot at basically the micro limits. I also feel like I am not playing as well as I used to (not trusting my reads, chasing bad draws, and making bad river calls). Playing when I am tired has hurt me quite a bit as well. Oh well here is my RUSH grid which at least makes me feel a little better.

Will take a day or two off for refection about the next chapter, and also possibly spend my 400k full tilt points on tournament tickets or something.

Apparently if you buyin for 40BB you automatically lose any allin preflops. I thought December was going better, but got smashed today. One day left of RUSH week, then I am probably just going to stop grinding and play the occasional MTT. This has become a waste of time (ie. the money I make does not justify the amount of hours I spend).

Because this is totally realistic. Same table back to back hands, AQvQJ AIPF, KKvAK AIPF. I am going to play another session in a little bit after I cool off, but seriously this is getting out of control, another 180 of EV towards the regfish coffers.
Edit: The next session lasted only 80 hands. I can't post the bad beat per my previous directive, but let's just say I stacked a short stack, then lost with a monster blind vs. blind. Ended the stake, and also the grind at FTP. Will try to get at least something from the RUSH promo and then spend all my full tilt points on tournaments or something.

This is what every day looks like. When I first started back at FTP a few months ago I was about 2500 above EV. Now I am about 4500 below EV. That is a swing of between 35-70 buyins below EV in just over a month. That equates to 70-140 coin flips. I am about ready to give it up.

This graph doesn't even show the coolers like when I have 98 and the other guy has KQ and he bets into 3 people on AT7 and of course the magic Jack comes and what can I do but go broke.

Played some NL($1) and recovered about $1k of the stake balance. I ran bad once again which broke my confidence, so I started buying in for 40BB, but not leaving the table when I am running good because of my lucky table theory. However, I doubled up a couple times once and then got the dreaded AAvAK and lost a full stack again. So much for the lucky table theory. The 40BB led to another problem, I lost 9 allin preflops in a row.

Anyhow, this week is RUSH week and at least I will get some money($250) in my pocket and not just be working on makeup. You need 1000 points per day and that equates to about 1600 hands of NL($2) full ring which is about 1.5 hours of 4 tabling if you are paying attention. Hopefully this promotion will attract some dead money.

I am going back to a mix of NL($1) and NL($2). Also, I will be playing less 6-max because I haven't been running well on the AIPFs which happen a lot more in 6-max. I am hoping to makeup as much of the stake balance for the staker before the end of the year. I may not play poker next year, or at the very least I am not going to grind like I have been grinding.

Bad attitude.

I have had a real bad attitude lately about poker, and I have to believe that is somewhat hurting my results. I took the same KKvQQ beat as a 7-1 favorite that I posted in my last post, this time for a full stack. The hand history is below this post, and it will be the last bad beat I am posting this year.

I just need to change my perspective. Whether I win or lose now, I am not really winning or losing. The stake has such high negative balance, ie. "70 stacks of low society" whether I win or lose during a given session it is not going to affect me financially. I am happy to continue playing for the staker, well 1. to be nice, and 2. I still at least get to keep my rakeback and other promotional monies.

I thought I was going to be on a huge heater, was up 5 buyins and if I won this pot then 6 buyins, oh well only 4 buyins for now. The reason that anyone can make money in poker is that one gets the money in good almost every time.

Moving down in the stake to NL($1) to rebuild confidence. That being said here are my 3 biggest losing hands during the session. At least I still won, because I held AAvKK and SETvOESD allin. Surprise, surprise, all three of my biggest losing hands were bad beats that were allin as 7-1, 3-1, and 3-1 favorite. All 3 were against "solid" regulars. The 3 regulars are supposedly winners, but actually they are @#$%: RAW_FORCE, Skilgannon1, and some other guy. Seriously I think something is up but what can I do. Well, I cashed for $1235 in the $640 FTOPS main event, getting 300th out of 5023 players. Played for about 7 hours. Usually to cash in an MTT you need to get good cards or run well. I did neither. The reason I was able to cash is because the skill level in this MTT was about that of the NL($0.25) tables. Here is a brief summary of my tourney.

hand 60: got a table change.
hand 90: got my first pair, JJ. Flopped top set, he had nothing and folded to my CR.
hand 155: got my third pair, TT (good monotone flop of AKxx, that I did not have the suit, but I guess he didn't either cuz I bet and he folded.)
hand ?: this was a critical hand, where I bluffed about 2/3 of my stack on the river with 88, on a board of A9x9A. I guess he had a flush draw, but I was sure he didn't have an ace, so I was only scared of a 9.
hand ?: lost a flip, AJs v 77 AIPF for ~T11k, leaving me only T7k, when average was T17k.
hand ?: guy put me allin with A6vA7 on an 873 flop. I held.
hand 245: got another table change.
hand ?: ATvJ8. The board was AJ98, I picked up and OESD and a ten high flush draw. In a ring game I would have just shoved, but I did not want to risk my tourney life. It went check-check and I binked an ace, hitting my 20 outer.

I then proceeded to make 3 possibly retarded, possibly genius preflop laydowns. It was not too far from the bubble. I laid down 99, JJ, and QQ preflop to a single raiser. All 3 times it was vs an UTG or UTG+1 raiser whose PFR was lower than 4%, who made some retarded size raise committing them to the pot. By retarded, I mean the normal open was for 2-2.5x, and the raiser would raise to 6x or something for half their stack.

Also not far from the bubble in a blind v blind situation, I have JJ in the big blind and the small blind limped. It felt like a trap, since he raised the other blind v blind times, so I checked behind. The flop was KQx with 2 diamonds. I min-bet thinking I might be good, he called. Turn x, check-check. River 9 of diamonds, completing every draw and I don't even have 2nd pair. He bet and I folded.

On hand 301, I got AA. Everyone folded. In the ~380 hands during the tourney, this is the only time I got AA or KK.
Hand 313 the bubble broke.
Hand 319 I won a flip AIPF KQv55 for T38k.
Hand 339 I open shove AKs UTG preflop and get called by AQo and hold for T81k.
Hand 343 I get checkraised by a preflop raiser and fold my 4th pair on the flop.
Final hand: I cold-4-bet shove AK and lose an AIPF vs QQ. Maybe I should have just folded (I folded AK and AQ preflop two other times in the tourney instead of cold 4-betting). Pot was for T116k.

Of course bad play can come by spewing 3BB at a time, making bad folds, not getting paid with your winners, or many other ways, but this is what I am reviewing right now. There is a question mark in the title because who knows if the stake is going to continue. I am not playing the staking limits on Sunday 11/21/10 because I am playing in the FTOPS main event, and also there are not sufficient funds.

Week 8 was another horrific disasterous week. Ran another $1000 below allin EV, but that is not the worst part. It is the horrible suckouts that come also when it is not allin and I pay it off drawing slim or dead. There were at least 5 sessions that I was up $500-$1000, but never was able to book any significant win. Will discuss with my staker on what he wants to do since it is his money that I am losing. Maybe we will have to include the lower limits again on the stake (but I lost on those this week too, only $200). Or maybe we should move the stake to PokerStars, or maybe just end it.

Will talk to him about it after the FTOPS main event. Was hoping to play alot this week since I am off work, but losing is not fun and destroys my motivation.

Well being positive was easy for the time I was not playing poker. It will be very easy to quit poker soon. Here was my evening session.

NL($1) -$302, 1000 hands won 33% at showdown (17/51). ~$200 below EV, plus other extreme nonsense.

PLO8($4) -$322, 100 hands, lost AAxx v AAxx, when he tripped up, and some other suckout that was like 10 outs or something.

I can't really believe that this is happening 25 days straight.

Thinking positive.

I have to start thinking more positive in poker. I have that book, The Poker Mindset, on my shelf, but like the 20 other poker books I haven't read it. Anyhow, I won 1 buyin at PLO8($0.50), and 5 buyins at NL($1) last night, so maybe things are turning around. I am not working at all next week, so I plan to put in a ton of volume.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I sold half of my action for a few MTTs, and will post the results here. I have a weird feeling that I am going to make a big score in one of these.

Wanted to do a quick review of today's session.

In my first 30 hands I experience an upswing getting good cards and everyone folds. Then at around hand 120 I lose top set vs a gutshot and backdoor flush draw when my turn checkraise failed. At around hand 160 I then lose AKv88 TPTK and nut flush draw allin vs a set. Also around this time I lose AAvQQ AIPF. I then should have quit playing right then and there with a $430 loss.

I continued. I then have a short stack and stupidly get allin preflop with JJ vs AA (cuz only they can win these). I then make a bit of a comeback holding AIPF AAv77, and JJvAQ(who flat-backraised shoved). I also won half a stack snapping off a bluff bring the loss to less than $200 and I thought things were going to turn around. Then the pain really started losing AKsvQQ AIPF, lost a flip with my flush draw and open ended straight draw vs TPNK. Then I missed the flop or got outdrawn for the next 50 hands, ending up down $650.

I don't know, I guess I suck at poker now. I don't see how I can possibly ever make a recovery on the stake, now down nearly 35 buyins. I have lost an additional ~12 buyins at lower limits on my own account as well.

I am being cheated.

Was up $1000 today and then lost it all. A set on the flop is an underdog to a flush draw, 2 pair, or another set. A big pair is an underdog to a small pair. KK is an underdog to Ax. I have had enough.

I got my 3rd refund today because people were cheating. I think I am getting cheated in some other way too that they are not telling me about. This is more than variance. I cannot have gone from crushing the games for 2 months to not being able to win at all.

Got a small cash in an MTT, of course had to get lucky to do that, but I still got unlucky a few hands in the HORSE tourney. Two beats in the FLO8 round and made a mistake on one razz hand that cost me 2-4 big bets. There was an interesting hand in the FLH round right near the bubble where I had AQ in the BB and some late position raises and I call. Flop is TJ3 with 2 hearts. I timed down the whole way hoping for 2 eliminations so I could just go with my hand for 3 more big bets, but I just ended up check folding. I am not sure what is higher EV, to take the cash or risk bubbling and still only a gutshot and overcard to get a slightly bigger stack.

Then I lost 5 buyins of my own money at NL100 in similar fashion to yesterday, KKvAK AIPF, KKvAA AIPF, set vs top pair making a running flush, and KTv77 who calls flop and turn then spikes a 7, etc. Did not win more than $30 in any pot, had 40% W$SD and not counting all the times I had to fold when I missed or it was obvious they got there. Also, whenever I do a donkey move in a 4-bet pot with 5 outs they always call and I never hit. Another graph which seems to be how every day looks.

There are insufficient funds on the stake, and I think the hole is too big to dig out of and will probably have to end the stake. The staker still makes a hefty profit, although this would be a poor ending. I have to think about the stake and also if I have any future playing at FTP anymore. I am having trouble outsmarting their dealing algorithm.

Probability of 17 straight days below EV is 131000-1 against, but even if you factor in say 5 years of trials ~1500 trials, that is still 87-1 against this happening.

No desire to play anymore.

Got stomped on again in Week 6. Many coolers that I couldn't fold, was missing most of my draws, bluffs that I thought should have worked didn't work, wasn't getting paid off with my good hands, and on top of that 1500 below EV. The stake balance is nearly depleted, and I am not sure if it is advisable for my staker to reload the way things are going, but that is up to him.

It got to the point on Sunday where I quit my session after 20 minutes after the 6 hands below.

First why should I get all those hands in such a short period, and why should I lose with them all (even though I did not lose much with each one it adds up). I wanted to fold my AQ flush on the river, but the guy bet small so I felt like I had to call. There is nothing eventful about these hands except that it is just one after another and doesn't seem to stop. Luckily, I had stacked a "nitty" regular at the beginning of my session with AK v QJ on a KJxx turn when he shoved it. (The last 2 times middle pair shoved on me on the turn I lost 2 full stacks and was happy it held this time.) I felt like I was going to just keep getting unlucky and have another big losing day so I just quit even on the day.

I knew by the way the action went that I was going to lose the pot with AA to AKs. That shouldn't be how I feel, but when I saw the cards I thought AKs was gonna get me, when I saw the flop I felt like the gutter was coming, and there the pot went again. What do you know it happened again that the person that shoved way behind got there. Every time when the pot is over 300BB ... Seems fishy. Another $689, this time to a "solid" regular BeerMe.

Week 5 was one of my worst weeks of poker ever. I lost 5 out of the 6 days I played. Even the day I won was volatile and painful, I was down 1000, then up 1600 before ending up 1000. I posted 3 of the coolers in giant pots ($612, $760, $868) already in previous blog posts, but there is no point posting 20 of the more standard ones. My spirit is crushed a bit from the last one that just happened 20 minutes ago, I was trying to protect my hand and shoved for $400 and you think bottom set could fold on a monotone board, but I guess that's why fish are fish.

Why did I lose?

I am doing some reflection on why I lost the last 3 days, and had to get additional funds added to my stake. I am taking the day off today to regroup and for additional analysis, but here are some of the reasons I lost.

1) bad luck - allin EV. This is ok, unavoidable.
2) bad luck - coolers. This is ok, unavoidable.
3) bad image - regulars are adjusting to my loose aggressive play, I have to readjust.
4) bad plays - 2-3 preflop tilty shoves.
5) bad plays - 2-3 river tilty calls when I knew I was beat, but justified my bad calls on pot odds and the thought that I couldn't have gotten rivered or cold decked again.
6) tired - making suboptimal decisions due to being extremely tired.

The day off will allow additional reflection and to get my energy back up to crush.

Stake Phase II (Week 5).

Week four was pretty good. I did play outside of the stake at lower limits some (I was feeling very unlucky, and guess what - I was). I lost ~$500 on PS and ~$400 on FTP outside of the stake. What's worse is I did not go to sleep on Friday night and only slept from 5am-7am, missed the gym and felt like crap most of Saturday. Volume will probably be lower the next couple of weeks due to work obligations. I was trying to win the rake race this month, but some high stakes PLO / high stakes superturbo guy is playing mad volume (even though he lost $400k) and there is no way for me to compete with him.

OMG, 2 days of NL($0.50)(9-max). Couldn't win showdowns, kept getting coolered 3 flush vs flush, 3 set under set ... and they would float two streets with overcards and would hit and I kept paying off like an ATM because their play made no sense.

Lost $666 at NL($0.50). (plus the $500 I lost at PS :()
Recovered $300 of it playing HU.

I am going back to the staking limits tomorrow (or at the bare minimum NL($1) where the players have brains). I don't seem to play as well vs. those horrific players because I can't read their hand (probably because they can't read it either).

His name seems to be Vincent Rubianes.
He has stolen approximately $1000-$2000 from me with his cheating.
I don't know how he is doing it.

I didn't make my money with my normal aggression, I made it today snapping off tons of bluffs to the tune of probably $400. I only lost one major pot -$272 when I turned an underset and stacked myself.

I had a major headache all day due to something I did yesterday ...

Super Turbos are really really stupid. I went 111-126. It felt like I was losing every single 60/40 and every single 40/60. Also, there is not much in life I am below average at, but I think super turbos are one of those things. I will not play them anymore.

I did sell half of my action for 4 tournaments.

Week three was great with heavy volume (45 hours, 34k hands). I probably won't have such high volume again (for real this time), I was resting from the gym again this week so that I could heal longer. I guess staking can be a good investment!
